I always like to start with a question...it gets people thinking. So what does pampering mean to you? Yes, I am a massage therapist so I have an idea. Lots of people tell me massage is just pampering but I know better than that. I know that I have had people in serious pain where they barely made it to my table and walked away a couple of hours later in less or no pain. I wasn't pampering them...I was giving their bodies permission to heal. But, believe me, those same folks can come in to relax like the very next day and that's OK...its so ok folks. When did pampering become a dirty word?
"Oh! you are so selfish." Why is giving yourself a treat selfish? Close your eyes and imagine for a few minutes how it feels to have someone else take of it...whatever "it" is. Doesn't that make you feel instantly better? How about doing that on a regular basis?
Now people often mistake selfcare as pampering. I've even heard experts use them synonymously. Pampering is something you do for yourself once in a while, not everyday but as a special treat to yourself. A reward, if you will, for being you. Selfcare, on the other hand, is ritual and vital to your overall health and wellbeing. Here's why you need both. You can't pour from a vessel that is empty...nothing is coming out!
According to the American Institute of Stress. 44% of Americans feel more stress than they did 5 years ago. 1 in 5 americans experience extreme stress - Shaking, Heart Palpitations and Depression. Work stress causes 10% of strokes. The US doesn't legally require workers to take time off. This is a shocking reality that we must take control of our own health and wellbeing.
The best way to take control is to have a plan...a Selfcare Strategy that allows you to take time out for yourself every single solitary day. The combination of pampering and selfcare is a winner. When we treat ourselves, we are telling ourselves and the world we care about our lives....its that simple. The pampering is something you do when you want to celebrate something special. That manicure or pedicure is your treat that makes you feel beautiful...do it! As often as you can. Selfcare is the steady engine that keeps you fueled in your everyday life...every single solitary day. Its things that pertain to mindset, commitment, nutrition, exercise, sleep, etc. the daily processes you put in place to live less busy and more focused.
