My Personal SelfCare Story

You hear all the time. "You have to make time for yourself."  "You can’t pour from an empty cup."  I liked that one so much that I used it for the title of my book.  That’s all well and good but here’s the deal.  We are all busy.  When I was working in a corporate job, I was unhappy and dissatisfied with what I was doing. I went home every night feeling like a fraud; I felt like management was going to figure out that I hated what I was doing and that I wasn’t that great at it. When I was laid off in 2008, quite frankly, I panicked I had a mortgage, bills, a young daughter and a new marriage that didn’t last.  In an economic downturn, it was the worst time to pursue a passion but I had to.  After my first divorce, I didn’t know what I wanted to do or be but I knew something had to change. Massage therapy was but a little twinkle in my heart; a small seed of something, I didn’t know what exactly.  I jumped on it…it felt right at the time. I jumped and then began building my business. As a result, I lost my house, my second husband and many of the things I thought were precious and valuable to me but I still had the gift of touch no one could take that away from me. However,  I still had no idea what I was doing in business but my enthusiasm made up for what I lacking in business savvy.

As time went on I would make some money and lose some money and start over again many times over. It still gets that way honestly.  In the midst of all this, I began to see patterns in my massage clients.  l saw patterns in people I knew would never get on my massage table or would get a massage because someone bought them a birthday gift card and they didn’t want to hurt the gifter's feelings by letting it expire…so they came to me with all this heaviness.  It was then that I started to move my massage practice beyond the table and out into the world of people so busy they can’t breathe. Those who stay busy out of obligation, responsibilities or because they are avoiding things they may not want to deal with.  My work is for those who are saying Ok, my cup is empty, now what? I am here for you. Selfcare awareness is going beyond saying yes, I deserve some 'me time' once in a while to knowing you deserve a 'me time' routine and practice everyday…that’s step number 1.  Selfcare awareness is about how you will incorporate that awareness into your life every day thereby refilling your cup daily.

I used to be the woman who figured the busier I was the more productive I was.  I was left broke, sad and exhausted.  Being selfcare aware doesn’t make you immune from life and its stresses but what it will do is help you set boundaries and create a life that puts you first priority so that you can be a better you.  I was watching other people run around doing stuff so I ran around doing stuff.  Now I know better and I am letting you know that you have permission to say no…not today. No….not now.  No….I don’t want to and be Ok.

When I first started my massage practice I actually told people they had to get rid of the stress in their lives…what!? So funny looking back now because we would all be pretty lonely because we would have to get rid of our kids, partners, businesses, jobs…everything!  My selfcare awareness movement is about calming the storm within not around us.  We can’t control what others do, say or feel but I can do that for myself. I can control me. I can choose. Is this easy?…heck no! not at first but like with anything practice makes progress and with that progress comes freedom.  Yes, I started "I am Selfcare Aware".  I am not the only one out here passionate about it and I certainly don’t have all the answers.  I still struggle with empty cup syndrome myself. Sometimes I get caught up with creating my products and services in my business that I get off my routine.  I started the "I am Selfcare aware community" so we can help each other, including me, stay on track with our fierce commitment to taking care of our own needs first.  Just the bit that I have done over the past couple of years in my own life to stay more Selfcare Aware, has made me a calmer, less busy and more productive person. I am more focused.  I want that for others too.

My promise to you is to not just tell you that you deserve time to yourself. I think many of us know that deep down but I want to show you; teach you and give you tools, affirmations, words and products and services that will help you incorporate wellness into your life...your real life.
